In an insightful interview by Attirer, Rene Reinsberg, the Co-Founder of Celo and current President of the Celo Foundation, explores Celo's vision, innovations, and role in reshaping the traditional financial landscape and combating climate change.

Rene Reinsberg emphasized the transformative power of smart contracts, stating, "We saw the power of smart contracts, and we got excited, for the first time in history, it seems like money was also going to be programmable like software. And if money is software, it can have many features." 

He discussed Celo's commitment to user-friendly innovations, including low fees, fast block times, and robust mobile compatibility, making Celo accessible even to first-time users since its mainnet launch on Earth Day 2020. Celo's dedication to sustainability was also evident in its support for community currencies backed by natural assets and from the community’s first governance proposal to make Celo carbon-negative through automated carbon offsets at the protocol layer, aligning with the urgent need for climate action. Climate action continues to be a priority, as with the recent introduction of Ultragreen Money through Celo’s Gingerbread Hard Fork. Through Ultragreen Money, 20% of transaction fees are allocated to a new Green Fund while the remaining 80% is burned. 

Blockchain's Role in Reshaping Business and Technology

Rene Reinsberg highlighted Celo's global reach, with more than 1,000 projects in over 150 countries. The Celo Foundation has worked with global organizations, from developing Community Inclusion Currencies (CIC) with Grassroot Economics to distributing decentralized crop insurance for smallholder farmers with Etherisc. The Celo ecosystem also includes enterprise giants like Deutsche Telekom, Telefónica, and Google Cloud, which run validators for the network. The common theme of regenerative finance resonated strongly, especially as climate change became more urgent.

Rene Reinsberg envisioned blockchain technology, particularly Web3, as a tool for mass coordination. Web3's global infrastructure allowed coordination among individuals, organizations, and governments to tackle challenges like climate change. Examples from Celo's ecosystem illustrated the potential for blockchain to unite diverse stakeholders in a common goal.

Celo's recent proposal to become a layer-two solution for Ethereum has garnered enthusiasm within the community and among industry innovators like Optimism, Polygon, and Matter Labs.
